Halau Makana is a Polynesian Dance Company located in Alameda, Ca.  We offer classes for the dances of Hawai’i, Tahiti and New Zealand from beginning to advanced levels.  Keiki to Kupuna are welcome.

Hawaiian Music Ensemble - ‘AHAmele - Instructor Kainani Hartnett

Academy of Hawaiian Arts holds a Hawaiian music ensemble class taught by Kainani Hartnett at the halau in Oakland, CA. The class is geared to learning ‘ukulele, guitar, and/or singing parts while working on Hawaiian music arrangements. The music ensemble’s performing group, ‘AHAmele, occasionally entertains at community events, and has performed in the annual ‘Ukulele Festival of Northern California since 2006. Hiva Nui Productions - Men and Women of Na Pua O Ka Honua

Aloha, Hula Halau (Hula School) Hiva Nui and The Men and Women of Na Pua O Ka Honua is a community based Hawaiian and Tahitian Dance Company that has been in existence since 1995.  Our Hula Classes have been enveloped by the diverse cultures here in Stockton  and vicinity with approximately 98 students.  We educate our haumana to further understand our mission and goals as a Hula Halau to perpetuate the Hawaiian Culture and Art of Hula.  This is done in co-part with the guidance of our Kumu Hula, Blaine Kamalani Kia and Juni Kalahikiola Romuar of Ka Waikahe Lani Malie representing Oahu, Kaua’I, Chiba Japan, Sacramento, Antioch, Ca., and Montana. 

Ho’omana - Leader Manley Bush

Within the Hawaiian community the Ho’omana Hawaiian Band is one of the top recording and performing groups in Northern California, a name newly recognized since November 2003. The name synonymous with traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music is known from San Francisco to Monterey, California.

 Hui Hula o na Pu’u i ka Noe - Kumu Kalena Gregory

 (”Hula group of the hills in the mist”) is a Polynesian cultural dance group established in 1988 by our kumu (”teacher”), Kalena Gregory. Our haumana (”dance group”) is made up of keiki and adult dancers, whom dance regularly at the Aloha Festival at the Presidio in San Francisco, other ethnic festivals, parties, and lu’aus. Our repertoire is concentrated mainly around Hawaiian hula (kahiko & ‘auana), though we learn and perform dances from Tahitian (’ote’a & ‘aparima), Maori, Samoan & other Pacific Islands as well.

 Ka Ehu Kai Hawaiian Band - Leader Tennyson Lum

Mele, music or song, is an integral part of the Hawaiian culture. For those who have lived or spent time in Hawai’i knows of the mana and power of mele and how it has provided the Hawaiians with a powerful vehicle for their oral traditions, allowing them to pass down their history and culture from generation to generation in a form that touches the hearts of the Hawaiians and Hawaiians at heart.  With this in mind, Ka Ehu Kai has a mission to touch those hearts and souls through our mele.

Kumu Liko Puha

Liko Puha has been involved with oli (Hawaiian chant) and hula for over 12 years. He has performed oli at many major events in Hilo including; the 2000 and 2001 Merrie Monarch Competition and various ceremonies held at UH Hilo. He has taught oli and oli appreciation at the Beamer Aloha Music Camp with resounding success. Liko completed his BA in Hawaiian Studies with emphasis in language and performing arts in 2004.

Na Leo Nahenahe - President Cathy Howe

We are an acapella chorus singing Hawaiian choral music in 4 to 8 part harmony. The purpose of the group is to promote and preserve Hawaiian language, culture and song through choral music. The music we sing covers a broad spectrum from classic standards of the Lili’uokalani era to more contemporary works.
